2018 Ram 1500 Redesign or Major Update

As Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) announced, the 2018 Ram 1500 is going to have a “major update”. Is this the same as a redesign and where’s the difference if there’s any? Since the lightweight pickup truck already had an “ordinary” update, the upcoming “major update” is expected to be more elaborate. Perhaps after we name all the changes, we’re going to determine whether the 2018 Ram 1500 is going to be redesigned or just updated.

Substantial Body Changes

The body of the new half-ton truck will definitely be altered in order to reduce the weight. As for the more substantial changes, aluminum-intensive design might be an option, although not particularly real.

Aluminum: YES or NO?

Although there are rumors that say the 2018 Ram 1500 is going to follow the Ford F-150’s suit and use lots of aluminum, it’s hard to estimate whether this is likely to happen. It is true that FCA is going to reduce the Ram 1500’s weight, but they’re probably going to use more conventional approach. Since they have highly efficient engines and they’re going to work on them, they don’t need to make compromises and investments in this manner.

However, according to the statement Sergio Marchionne gave earlier, they will be able to use aluminum in 2017. We wrote about this topic in detail. So, since the next-gen Ram 1500 is going to have substantial body changes, some would already declare this as a redesign.

The exterior design is going to be altered. It’s still unknown how they’re going to redesign the body of the 2018 Ram 1500. They will keep the recognizable brand’s design language, following the established evolutionary design direction, but the new truck must be an eye candy and that can’t be achieved by slightly altering the details. It’s questionable whether they’re going to make more fundamental exterior changes now, or they’re going to wait for the announced redesign, which should be released as a 2020 model.

Since they have big corporate plans tightly connected with the 2018 Ram 1500 release, the truck is expected to be radically revised when it comes to the body design. Some rumors say that the next-gen Ram 1500 is going to have a drastically redesigned body with innovative loading solutions.

Engine Updates & Hybrid Powertrain

The aforementioned engine changes will not just show what the automaker can do with their mills. As the government’s regulations become more and more restrictive, those who make trucks must use all the creativity their rock-star engineers have in order to decrease CO2 emission. Thanks to those permanent improvements, the 2018 Ram 1500 won’t just get the reengineered mills with more miles per gallon, horsepower and torque. It will be treated with a mild hybrid powertrain.
